LEADING FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

LOCAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE (LPDC)

What is LPDC?

The Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC) is a committee that has the authority to approve or not approve your license for renewal. This includes the authority to approve or not approve any professional development, which could include continuing education units (CEUs) and or university credit.

Individuals wishing to renew/transition a certificate/license must present their credentials to TCESC’s LPDC for review and approval. Upon approval of the LPDC, the application renewal/transition will be forwarded to the Ohio Department of Education.

How does the LPDC impact me?

To renew an educator license with the Ohio Department of Education, you must have the approval of the LPDC chairperson on your application form.

Educators are responsible for working with their Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC) and for ensuring that their requirements for maintaining a certificate and/or license are met.  TCESC’s Human Resources Department will assist you; however, it is solely your responsibility to track your professional development activities and all your certificate/license expiration dates.

What do I have to do to have

the LPDC approve my license application?

  1. Write an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) and have a current IPDP on file.  The LPDC cannot approve any professional development without an IPDP on file.

  2. Submit copies of professional development workshop certificates with the cover sheet to the LPDC as the workshops are completed.

  3. Submit the license renewal application and list of approved CEUs or official college transcripts to the LPDC when it is time to renew your license. The LPDC chairperson must sign the renewal application before it is sent to ODE.

Step 1: Write an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP)

Ohio law requires all educators to write an IPDP. Educators must submit a new  IPDP every five years when a new license is issued.

It’s simple to write an IPDP. The form is on the TCESC website, under the Employees, LPDC. You’ll only have to complete some basic information on the top of the form. Next, click on a two drop down menus and type in five to ten words. Then sign the form and you are done.  Below are some step by step directions for writing an  IPDP for TCESC’s LPDC.

  1. Complete the top of the form, which requires some basic information such as name, licensure type, effective licensure dates, etc.

  2. Select one organizational goal from the drop down menu. Most people select the goal that states: To build school district capacity to improve learning by providing technical assistance, training, staff and resources as measured by customer feedback.

  3. Write your own personal goals. The drop down menu on the IPDP form allows you to select the first half of the goal. The following options are available:

  • To continue to develop my knowledge of

  • To enhance my professional knowledge in

  • To improve my skills in

  • To learn and demonstrate understanding in

  • To learn more about

  • To learn how to apply

  • To maintain current knowledge of

  • To seek additional knowledge and skills via

All you have to do is complete the sentence for one of the items above.
IPDP goals should be very broad so that every professional development activity that you participate in throughout a 5-year licensure period can be covered by the goal.

Below are some examples of approvable IPDP goals:

  • To continue to develop my knowledge of special education.

  • To enhance my professional knowledge in using technology in the classroom.

  • To learn more about working with special education students.

  • To maintain my current knowledge of school law.

  1. Select the drop down menu that that states you will do a combination of University credit and workshops.

  2. Print the document, sign it and submit it to Denise Domhoff, LPDC secretary, in the TCESC human resources office.

  3. LPDC will review the IPDP and either approve it or send it back to you for revisions. If it is sent back to you for revisions, this usually means that the goals you wrote are too specific. The LPDC strives to approve IPDPs with goals that are broad enough to encompass any professional development activity that an individual engages in throughout a 5-year licensure period.

Step 2: Approving Continuing Education Units

After an educator has completed the  IPDP, the educator can begin accumulating contact hours, which will be converted to continuing education units that are used to renew licenses.

Each time an educator receives a certificate of professional development, the certificate should be submitted to the LPDC using the Workshop Continuing Educational Units: Educator Request for Approval form as a cover sheet.

Each submission should include:

  • The completed Workshop Continuing Educational Units: Educator Request for Approval form. Click here for the form.

  • A copy of the certificate from the professional development session.

  • A copy of the agenda from the professional development session. This is not required if the session is conducted by TCESC.

The LPDC will review the professional development to ensure that it meets the goals of the approved IPDP.

Step 3: Applying for a License Renewal

When it becomes time to renew a license, the educator must submit the application to the LPDC for approval. The LPDC chairperson must ensure that the educator has an approved IPDP on file and that all the professional development being used to renew the license has been approved by the LPDC.

To renew a standard teaching or administrative license, an individual must:

  • Have an IPDP approved by the LPDC before beginning any professional development activities.

  • Achieve the necessary number of CEUs or semester hours.
  • To renew using semester hours, you must submit transcripts from an accredited college or university showing 6 semester hours.

  • To renew using CEUs, you must submit verification of completion of 18 CEUs or 180 clock hours. These CEUs must be approved by the LPDC before the license can be renewed.

  • To renew using both semester hours and CEUs, you must have a combination of semester hours and CEUs that equal 6 semester hours or 18 CEUs. A conversion chart is available under the LPDC Resources section of this webpage to assist you with doing the conversion of CEUs to semester hours.

The required materials must be submitted to the human resources secretary, who will schedule a review of materials with the TCESC LPDC.
