Identifying Similarities and Differences - Marzano, Chapter 2 "As an instructional strategy, it includes various activities that help learners see patterns and make connections".

    • Use the word drawing toolbar to draw diagrams, charts and templates for comparisons

    • Use the AutoShapes to draw shapes and connectors.  Insert SmartArt to add a Venn Diagram.

    • Create a table for classifying information.

  • Spreadsheet Software

  • Organizing and Brainstorming Software

  • Data Collection Tools

    • Student collect data and record it in a spreadsheet for comparison purposes.

Summarizing and Notetaking  Marzano, Chapter 3 "enhancing students' ability to synthesize information and distill it into a concise new form."

  • Word Processing Applications

    • Use the Track Changes feature to take a paragraph from the reading and make changes in it to summarize to make it easier to understand.

    • Use the AutoSummarize feature and let the computer summarize the article. Click here for directions.

    • Use bullet commands to take outline notes

  • Organizing and Brainstorming Software

  • Multimedia

    • Use powerpoint for notetaking with the 2 column template so that a student may make connections between concepts.

  • Web Resources for taking notes collaboratively -- since these involve collaboration it will be necessary to create an account.

  • Communication Software

    • TCESC Web 2.0 page has an extensive collection of these tools. Look at blogs & wikis

Reinforcing Effort and Providing Recognition   Marzano, Chapter 4 "giving students rewards or praise for accomplishments  related to the attainment of a goal".
